Lomotil

Diphenoxylate, also known by the brand name Lomotil, is a prescription medication used to treat diarrhea. It works by slowing down the movement of the intestines, reducing the frequency and urgency of bowel movements. Lomotil should only be used for short-term treatment of diarrhea and is not recommended for chronic use.

Common side effects of Lomotil include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, and constipation. It may also cause serious side effects such as difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, and mood changes. Patients should be monitored closely for any adverse reactions while taking this medication.

Before prescribing Lomotil or continuing its use, it is important to conduct laboratory tests to check for any underlying conditions that may be causing diarrhea. These tests may include blood work, stool samples, and imaging scans.

The recommended starting dose for Lomotil is 5mg (2 tablets) four times a day. Dosage may be adjusted based on the severity of symptoms and response to treatment. Lomotil should be taken with a full glass of water and may be taken with or without food.

Lomotil is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to diphenoxylate or atropine, as well as those with severe liver disease, glaucoma, or a history of substance abuse. It should be used with caution in patients with heart conditions, kidney disease, or thyroid disorders.

The mechanism of action of Lomotil involves inhibiting excess bowel activity and reducing the loss of fluids and electrolytes in the stools. It is indicated for the treatment of acute diarrhea and is not recommended for use in children under 2 years of age.

The maximum daily dose of Lomotil is 20mg (8 tablets) and the duration of treatment should not exceed 48 hours. It is important to follow the recommended dosage and duration of treatment to avoid serious side effects. If symptoms persist or worsen, patients should consult their healthcare provider.
